About

City of Ely Netball Club started in 2011 and is open to girls in year 8 and over who want to play competitive netball in Ely. We currently have 3 senior squads (16 years and over) that compete in the Cambridgeshire County Premier League and the Cambridgeshire and District Netball League which are recognised by England Netball. We always welcome new players so please get in touch now if you want more information.

What does it cost?

Your first and second training sessions are free. After this we ask you to make a commitment and join the club as well as affiliate with England Netball. Affiliation ensures you are covered by the insurance offered by England Netball.  All junior members must affiliate to England Netball after attending 3 sessions.  Membership covers training sessions, friendly matches, court hire, payment of coaches, equipment etc.  New members can guest play once with Team 1, Team 2 ot Team 3 but cannot play in league games beyond this until they are awarded a position in a Squad at the next trials session.

UMPIRES AND COACHES

There is more to netball that just playing. City of Ely Netball Club encourages players to become umpires, coaches and scorers. If you are interested in these opportunities, please speak to a committee member about courses and the club can support you in funding these. City of Ely Netball Club expects all players to treat their captains, coaches, umpires, scorers and fellow players with respect.

Training

City of Ely Netball Club training takes place at Witchford Village College outdoor netball courts.

Training starts at 7.30pm and runs until 9pm on Thursdays. Please make sure you are at the courts ready for a 7.30pm start. Bring a bottle of water. Please make sure you have removed all jewellery and that your nails are short and smooth. Each session starts with a full warm-up to help prevent injuries. Any players arriving late should complete their own warm-up. Please help replace tennis nets as necessary at the end of the session.

If you have been selected for a squad, participation is expected at every training session. Captains and club secretary will keep a weekly register to monitor this. Of course we accept that there are odd occasions when you are unable to attend owing to work commitments, exams, etc, you will inform your captain in advance of this. If a player’s attendance at training is poor they run the risk of being dropped from their squad and a replacement player brought up. At the AGM in April 2015 we agreed to grow and develop our squads and the only way we can achieve this is by training sessions and coaching as a squad.

Occasionally training is cancelled due to extreme weather. All club members will be informed via Spond, email and Facebook as far in advance as possible. Same day changes will be communicated by text message. Please make sure we have your correct contact details to avoid disappointment.

Can I play in a team?

Yes you can! City of Ely Netball Club always welcomes new players. We do have a few things you need to know about though...

What are trials?

City of Ely Netball Club runs trials twice a season to establish which players are suited to play in which team. As of Summer 2023, trials are held twice over July and August and once over December, half way through the season. The club currently has three squads that are entered into the Cambridgeshire County Premier League and the Cambridge and District Netball League.

A coach runs the trial sessions. They consist of a skills session followed by some game play where you may find yourself playing in a number of different positions as different combinations are tried. Before the session you will be asked which positions you would prefer to trial for.

Will the teams change during the season?

There will be a review of the trials mid-season in December/January so there is the opportunity to move up (and similarly down) during the season. The club will continue to run 2 trials sessions each year - one before the beginning of the season and one mid-season.

What happens if I join mid-season, can I still play in a team?

Once the squads have been selected for the current season we cannot guarantee new players joining us between trials a place in a squad. You are more than welcome to join and attend training and there may be opportunities to play if there are injuries or availability issues with existing squad players. There are also regular friendly matches arranged that you can take part in. You will be able to enter yourself into the next trials session and will be equally considered for teams as existing players. You may not get team play straight away but you won't have to wait long.

As we get more players we are keen to build the club so at the beginning of the season we will re-consider the number of squads we enter into the league.  We are however a competitive netball club and wish to ensure that each squad has sufficient strength before a new one is formed.

What if I don't want to play in a team?

You are more than welcome to attend training and join in with friendly matches without committing to a team or taking part in the trials. Once you have attended 3 training sessions you will need to affiliate to England Netball for insurance purposes even if you do not intend to play in a league game.

meet the committee
